Fili smirked. “Because your mother thinks she has control over me. But…” Fili holds up the key that he stole from Bobbi’s drawer. “I think we should go see what our forefathers have left for us.”
The boy smiled brightly, “I want to see the gold so badly…” He said but then tapered off, “Won’t… mother be mad you have her key?”
“It isn’t her family’s gold, is it? Technically an elf has no say in what happens to the Durin’s gold. Even your mother. It is our gold. One day, it will be your children’s gold, then their children’s gold. Though, we cannot get too attached to it and that is why your mother locks us out so we don’t catch the gold illness.” Fili said, unlocking the door. “We won’t stay in for too long.”
Nali frowned and looked around, afraid his mother would catch them— or worse, Gaili would catch them and tattle. Swallowing he spoke, “But da… I am an elf…” He was old enough now that such remarks stung a bit.
“What’s gold illness?”
“But you are still a dwarf as well. You are growing up in Erebor, you are heir to the throne of Durin. You have a fine beard on you.” When Fili heard Nali’s question, he looked down and smiled weakly. “Let’s hope you never find out.”
“Aye… But mother is- she’s mother! You love her don’t you da?” He frowned, his little eyes full of uncertainty.
“I do love your mother, very very much. More than you’ll ever know, but…. It’s not her gold and we should be able to do what we want with it. Besides, Nobody has taken inventory since we gave Dale their share that Thorin promised them.” Fili opened the door and stepped in side, taking a few steps forward only to turn and look at his son. “And I am your father and I am the king of this kingdom. If I say it was alright, then it is alright. And if mother finds out, you won’t get in trouble, it will me be I who gets in trouble.”
